Title: CD163-positive alternatively activated monocytes as a marker of early miscarriage

Abstract

The early threat of abortion does not lose its relevance among the most significant problems of modern obstetrics. The impairment of immune mechanisms is considered one of the most significant pathogenetic factors.

The Aim: To develop a new method for predicting spontaneous miscarriage in women with threatened miscarriage at early stages of gestation, based on determining the content of alternatively activated monocytes expressing the CD163 scavenger receptor in peripheral venous blood.

Material and methods: 71 women were examined in the period of 5-12 weeks of pregnancy, pregnancy ended in timely delivery in 54 women (Group 1), spontaneous miscarriage (in early and late pregnancy) in 17 women (Group 2). The relative content of CD14+CD16++ monocytes bearing the CD163 scavenger receptor was determined on a FACScanto II flow cytometer (Becton Dickinson, USA).

Results: In women of the examined groups, the content of classically and intermediately activated monocytes expressing the scavenger receptor CD163 did not have a statistically significant difference. However, the content of alternatively activated monocytes expressing the CD163 scavenger receptor in women whose pregnancy ended in spontaneous miscarriage was statistically different from those in women whose pregnancy ended in timely delivery.

Conclusions: The content of alternatively activated monocytes expressing the CD163 scavenger receptor in peripheral blood can be used as a predictor of spontaneous miscarriage in women with threatened early miscarriage.
