Title: Perception of Portuguese nurses: clinical supervision and quality indicators in nursing care

Abstract

Aims: To describe the perceptions of the nurses regarding the influence of clinical supervision on the improvement of the quality indicators of nursing care. Methods: Exploratory research with a qualitative approach, which was carried out with 16 nurses using the method of focus groups. After transcribing the contents

After transcribing the focus group content, IraMuTeQ software (R Interface for Multidimensional Analysis of Texts and Questionnaires) was used as a data processing support tool, allowing lexicographic text analysis according to Descending Hierarchical Classification (DHC) and similarity analysis. Results: According to the thematic approach, 84.5% of the 194 text segments were retained, with the construction of five semantic classes on the following concepts: clinical supervision and audit model of care quality according to DHC. As for similarity analysis, it produced four central nuclei represented by the words care, audit, process, and supervisor, denoting nurses' perception of clinical supervision and the organizational audit model.

According to the monothematic approach, 80.0% of the 185 text segments were retained, with the construction of six classes. As for the similarity analysis, this led to the composition of three central nuclei represented by the words process, knowledge, and supervisor. These nuclei denote the nurses' perception of the clinical supervision strategy in improving the positive indices of quality of care resulting from the audits. Discussion: The results of the nurses' perceptions highlight the importance of implementing clinical nursing supervision processes in improving audit positivity rates, contributing to an increase in nursing care quality indicators. Conclusions: In the perception of the nurses, supervision has an impact on the quality indicators of nursing care.
